Located adjacent to the main hospital entrance, this previously vacant emergency department has been repurposed into a new 16-bed medical surgery nursing unit. Multiple design strategies were utilized to create visual and acoustical privacy for the updated interiors, including newly planted exterior landscaping, double-insulated laminated glass that minimizes outside noise and provides ample daylight, and a fenestration system that reduces visibility into patient rooms.

The color palette is calming and warm, reflecting the surrounding topography of Walnut Creek, with varying shades of the Mt. Diablo range and confluence of creek systems. Wayfinding includes vibrant, large-format graphics that offset the neutrals of flooring and casework and the clean, minimal atmosphere rendered via expanses of crisp white. The staff lounge provides a place for respite and is enriched with soothing accents. The project serves as a model for future renovations at this campus.
Ratcliff won the gold award in the Remodel/ Renovation category for HCD
