Following the substantial completion of the Pediatric Emergency Department renovation in 2022, the next phase of the project involved refreshing the existing exterior canopy as part of the donor engagement initiative.
The design team has seized this opportunity to address several existing non-compliant conditions, including improvements to the accessible drop-off area and the curb ramp for accessible parking. These enhancements has improved traffic flow into the emergency department parking lot, and also ensured compliance with current accessibility standards.

Before: Area for improvement included the passenger drop-off zone and valet parking.
Providing a welcoming and comfortable environment for our patient and visitors is paramount at Stanford Health Care, and I took on a key role in collaborating with various internal departments, including Transportation & Grounds, Exterior Management, and Facility Management. My efforts in the project scope included installation of recessed heater to enhance patient comfort, as well as improvements to the ED parking lot.
I collaborated closely with the architect, structural engineer, and geotechnical engineer to develop a foundation system capable of supporting the cantilever canopy. This innovative solution combines micropiles with a tension anchorage system known as a deadman anchor.
Our structural engineer, Degenkolb Engineers, has been instrumental in addressing the challenges posed by the existing weak soil, ensuring the stability and integrity of the structure.
