As part of Sutter Health's goal in providing equal access to all, the owner wanted to provide more high-quality, single-occupancy accessible inpatient bedrooms to deliver more privacy to patients.
The design team evaluated existing patient floors from the following six (6) departments: Antepartum, Labor & Delivery, Postpartum, Medical/ Surgical, Intermediate Care, and Medical/ Surgical/ Stroke.

The design team reviewed the existing floor layout to determine the most efficient layout. The team conducted working sessions with accessibility expert, facility, nursing manager, and nursing staff to review design and make adjustment during the design phase.
The result is a universal patient bedroom design that provides the highest level of care to patients, an efficient and safe working environment for staff, and a comforting space for visitors.
